Nervous About Your Root Canal? Facts to Help Ease Your Mind

Nervous About Your Root Canal? Facts to Help Ease Your Mind

When it comes to dental procedures, root canals rank as one of the most dreaded. But that’s largely because people aren’t aware that advancements in dentistry have made this procedure into one that’s both commonplace and comfortable.

Here at Sendero Dental Studio in Rancho Mission Viejo, California, Dr. Jeffrey Barrera applies his specialization in root canals to help patients feel as relaxed as possible before and during their procedures.

With that goal in mind, we wanted to highlight some facts that might help you feel less anxious before an upcoming root canal appointment.

It shouldn’t hurt

It’s a common misconception that a root canal is a painful procedure. Actually, Dr. Barrera takes great care to ensure you’re properly numbed throughout the treatment. You might feel a little pressure in your mouth during certain parts of the procedure, but you shouldn’t feel any discomfort at all.

In fact, if you do, tell Dr. Barrera. He can apply more anesthetic to ensure your root canal is pain-free.

You won’t need to take time off

Most people are able to head back to their daily activities right after a root canal. Your mouth will be numb for a couple of hours afterward, which can make eating and drinking feel odd, but you shouldn’t need to cancel any engagements.

Root canals are safe

Root canals have a success rate of more than 95%, meaning that the tooth is repaired and, with proper care, will last your lifetime. And Dr. Barrera has extensive experience performing these procedures, so you can rest easy knowing you’re in seasoned hands.

It won’t change the way your mouth looks

After a root canal, you’ll need either a filling or a crown to protect the area Dr. Barrera treated. Fortunately, we can color-match the crown or filling to blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. That means that the appearance of your smile won’t change after your procedure.

We can help if you’re nervous

Plenty of people feel anxious before getting a root canal. We know that, and we want to be able to offer you some relief. That’s why Dr. Barrera offers sedation dentistry.

We can provide you with medication that you take beforehand to help you relax while you’re in the dentist’s chair. If you’re feeling nervous about your upcoming root canal, talk with our team about your options.
