A smile makeover combines two aspects of dentistry into a single, overarching process: fixing cosmetic issues and restoring the health and functionality of your teeth. It may be called a full-mouth reconstruction when the work has become medically necessary.
At Sendero Dental Studio in Rancho Mission Viejo, California, Dr. Jeffrey Barrera and his team are in the business of creating beautiful and healthy smiles using cutting-edge dental technology and a personal touch.
We take an individualized approach to smile makeovers, customizing the work to both your aesthetic goals and dental hygiene. Here’s what we want you to know about what’s involved.
Why do I need a smile makeover?
The purpose of performing a smile makeover is to restore your teeth to a functional, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing state. Not everyone needs such extensive work, but anyone whose dental health is suffering should consider it carefully.
Not only do we address cosmetic problems and ensure your teeth are plaque- and decay-free, but we also make sure they’re properly aligned, so you can care for them well.
Over a lifetime, your mouth accumulates stains, chipped teeth, worn-down teeth, shifted teeth, assorted mouth trauma, and decay. Tooth decay, left untreated, can lead to gingivitis (early gum disease) and even periodontitis (so severe you lose teeth).
You may also develop tooth infections or, if you have gapped teeth, infections in the gap, especially if you don’t clean it properly. A smile makeover addresses all these problems and more.
What options do I have for a smile makeover?
Some of the options Sendero Dental Studio provides include:
- Dental implants
- Dental crowns
- Dental veneers
- Dental bridges
- Dentures (partial or full)
- Tooth-colored fillings
- Root canals (for viable teeth)
- Braces and Invisalign®
Full-mouth reconstructions take a number of appointments over many months to complete, in large part because your mouth may need to heal between different stages of work. The end result, though, is well worth the wait and the cost — you have a fully functional and healthy mouth, as well as a dazzling smile you’ll be happy to show.
How a smile makeover works
Here’s how we address a number of dental issues.
We replace silver, gold, and amalgam dental fillings, especially in the front teeth, with tooth-colored composite restorations. They’re all matched in color to your surrounding teeth to make them more natural-looking.
Natural tooth color and shading are important in preparation for various procedures, too, including crowns, bridges, composite bonding, and dental implants, which all require above the gum restorations.
Alignment and spacing
Crooked or overlapping teeth can be fixed with either traditional metal braces or Invisalign, clear plastic aligners that do the same job but are practically invisible, making you less self-conscious about your appearance.Teeth with gaps between them can also be corrected by orthodontics, or their appearance can be improved with veneers.
Missing teeth don’t just affect your appearance. They affect your bite, increase tooth decay risk because of hard-to-reach gaps, and fail to stimulate jawbone cell production, causing the bone to atrophy. Replacing these teeth is medically necessary.
Traditional options include bridges between surrounding teeth or partial dentures. A more cutting-edge approach is the dental implant, a titanium post anchored into your jawbone that serves both as a support for the crown above and as a means of jawbone stimulation.
Dr. Barrera can cosmetically bond uneven, chipped, and/or cracked teeth to improve your appearance. He can also treat a “gummy” smile (too much gum for your tooth size) by recontouring your gums and teeth to improve your smile’s overall look.
Fuller lips, smile, and cheeks
Dr. Barrera uses more cosmetic-oriented techniques to rejuvenate an aging face, such as orthodontics and oral maxillofacial surgery. A full set of teeth also helps to support the hollowed-out cheeks that typically occur as you get older.
If you’re self-conscious about your teeth due to cosmetic and/or dental health issues, Sendero Dental Studio can help with one or a dozen options to make you happy to smile again.
